Where your mystical journey to the Land of Gods – Spiti would generally begin at Kaza, the biggest town and the capital of the valley. Think of a logical imaging of a remote Himalayan town nestled between snow-capped peaks and scattered with flat-roofed white houses. Kaza is where tradition and adventure collide — where you can sip butter tea in a serenely empty monastery or gear up for a trek into the wilderness.
Perched dramatically on a hilltop as if it were a guardian of time, Key (or Ki) Monastery is the biggest monastery in Spiti Valley and a massive spiritual hub. And when you stand at its base and look up along the column’s layered length, it is as if you are staring into an ancient painting. Inside, there are centuries-old murals, rare manuscripts and young monks deep in devotion.
A short journey from Key Monastery, Kibber is a charming village located over 14,000ft above sea level. Best known for its white-washed homes, stone fences and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Snow turns Kibber into a fairyland wonderland, with snow leopard sighting out of Kibber as the base.
More than a thousand years old, Tabo Monastery is sometimes called the Ajanta of the Himalayas because of its exquisite murals and stucco statues which are reminiscent of the art of the Ajanta Caves. Tabo is a more modest affair than the seven-storey behemoth of Key — but go inside and the spiritual weight of the place will hit you. Though serene and composed of mud brick outside, the monastery conceals elaborate frescoes and sacred scripture within.
Chandratal, literally “Moon Lake”, is a clear blue lake in the high Himalayas that looks like a sparkling gem nestled between the majestic mountains. The lake, which is 4,300 meters above sea level, takes on different hues with the sun — from turquoise in the morning to deep blue at twilight.
Perched on the side of a cliff like a closely held secret, the Dhankar Monastery boasts breathtaking views of the meeting of the Spiti and Pin rivers. It is more than a 1000 years old and a marvel of architecture.
A brisk but lung-squeezing walk from the monastery is the tranquil, barren Dhankar Lake, ensconced between wind-blown mountains and absolute silence. It makes for the ultimate prize for those in search of solitude and soul-stirring landscapes.
Side-trips off the main Spiti circuit take you to desert valleys surrounded by sheer mountains and populated by rare flora and fauna such as the Pin Valley. It’s where the elusive snow leopard wanders, the mountain goat leaps with impunity and every corner could be a painting.
What Langza is famous for (and it’s three of the big ones) It has ancient marine fossils The massive golden Buddha statue It presents some of the most astonishing views of the Himalayas Strolling through this village, you will sense the ancient ocean that once was here and, if you’re lucky, find some of the fossilized shells beneath your feet.
Millions of years ago Langza used to be under water and, that is why fossil hunting happens here!
If you want to send a postcard from heaven, Hikkim is where to do it. Situated more than 14,500 ft, it’s the highest post office in the world, still operational. Write a letter to your folks and it will take a Himalayan magic along.
An unheard place by tourists Lhalung is a tranquil village and is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Spiti – Lhalung Devta Gompa. With stunning countryside, historic walls, and an atmosphere that will give you peace within, it is a best-kept secret.
